Reference Policy ILD Center of excellence, St. Antonius Hospital, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands
Medical specialists can appeal to the ILD Expertise Center of St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein for advice. Questions about a patient with an interstitial lung disease (ILD), may include a diagnostic problem or a therapeutic advice. The questions can be submitted initially on paper: Second Opinion on Paper (SOOP) to our multidisciplinary team. If the question is answered sufficiently during the multidisciplinary consultation (MDO), the patient will not be called to the out patient clinic. If the conclusion is that the patient could be best referred for answering the questions then he or she will be called.
You can also indicate that you want the patient to be called to our out patient clinic immediately.
References from GPs are, in principle, not considered unless it is a new disease history from the region of Nieuwegein.
If there is a new disease history outside the region of Nieuwegein or if the patient in question has not been seen by a medical specialist for more than one year, it is advisable to refer the patient to a pulmonologist in his or her region for the purpose of the disposal of recent lung function , Imaging, etc., necessary to perform a second opinion (otherwise it is not a second opinion). It is very important that the patient in question discusses the request with his own specialist in his own region. The specialist can then officially file a request. In addition, it is important that the current specialist is aware of the request.
